United Cerebral Palsy of Suffolk is awarding Splashes of Hope with a Life Without Limits Award for our work on their mural project which was completed last month. From July 11-22, Splashes of Hope painted the mural at UCP of Suffolk’s Childrens Center, which was the largest mural Splashes of Hope has created to date.

The team of staff and volunteer artists spent 10 twelve-hour days in the facility’s playroom, a former school gymnasium, painting each of the four gigantic walls with a mural of a different season. Each season features the Childrens Center’s mascot, the Honey Bear.

Below are images of the process Splashes of Hope went through to produce this beautiful and cheerful artwork. While painting, the artists were visited by the young students of the facility, who frequently assisted in the painting process.

It is with mixed emotions that we bid farewell (but not forever!) and congratulations to our volunteer extraordinaire, Brian Fiedler. A graduate of Cornell University, with over 60 hours of post baccalaureate work at Stony Brook, he is beginning an exciting new phase of his life, that of a pre-med student at LECOM in Bradenton, Florida. Because he is such a humble person, we’ll gladly do the boasting on his behalf…

Brian has been an invaluable volunteer since he first assisted painting murals four years ago. He readily admits that it once took him two weeks to paint a blowfish in an ocean scene, but from that rather humble beginning, he has graduated into being our “king of the castle,” where he is currently completing 40 ceiling tiles for our Huntington Hospital project. He works quickly and efficiently, and has perfected his own style; the backgrounds are airbrushed in subtle, opaque colors and the foregrounds hand painted with intricate and delicate figures. He is a self-taught artist and loves to try new things, just for the challenge of figuring them out.Brian states that his involvement at Splashes of Hope has “no downside,” and he looks upon his involvement at Splashes as leaving a legacy of hope. He loves the camaraderie, and will do anything that is asked of him, be it prepping for murals, driving the Splashes van, face painting, painting and installing murals… and all with a smile! (And does he have ANY idea how much he resembles Derek Jeter?) We know that he will bring the same commitment, generosity, kindness, and enthusiasm to his work in medicine.

Heather Buggee describes Brian as a “beacon of light. He possesses a unique combination of talent and compassion in both arts and sciences.” She further stated, “The Huntington Hospital ICU staff has already seen Brian’s ceiling tiles make a difference. Patients, when coming out of anesthesia, need to reorient themselves. Focusing on Brian’s ceiling tiles helps them accomplish this in a positive and nonthreatening way.”

Although Brian will be moving to Florida, he is adamant that he will remain a Splashes volunteer, painting ceiling tiles for local Splashes projects. The Southeast branch of our organization looks forward to stalking (er, keeping in touch with) him… so, it’s farewell, but not goodbye!

Last year, a team of artists came together to create Friend on the Mend, an 80-page coloring and activity book designed to address the needs of hospitalized children. Friend on the Mend tells the story of Alice the Elephant and her trip to the hospital. When Alice’s friends paint a mural for her, her spirits are lifted at once, and she is reminded of all that awaits outside the hospital walls. Alice’s story parallels Splashes of Hope’s pursuit of enhancing the healing process by providing medical and social service facilities with works of art.

Copies of Friend on the Mend, enclosed in a gift bag which includes a monkey hand-puppet with a pocket full of crayons, are available for purchase below.
